Jabr
The Arabic term 'jabir' refers to a person who has completed their education, which can also encompass someone who is highly educated. This word is commonly used in Islamic studies and literature. In a broader sense, it could imply any individual with advanced knowledge of a particular subject matter.
Types of 'Jabir':
Technical Terminology:
Within Islamic jurisprudence, there is a distinction between two types of jabirs. One type applies to those who have mastered all four branches of Islamic law (fiqh), and another type refers specifically to experts in hadith narrations.
In classical Islam, being called a mujtahid was considered the highest level of achievement within fiqh. A mufti is a lower rank, one step below a mujtahid, indicating competency in giving fatwas, or non-binding legal opinions, on specific questions within Sharia, Islamic Law.
Personal Description:
A more general usage might describe anyone exceptionally well versed in a field such as art, history, literature, music, science, medicine, etc., as a jabir. Here, the emphasis would be on the exceptional capacity of understanding and application rather than the formal completion of an academic program.
'Gowayajibri' and its Usage:
Related to this concept is the notion of 'gowayajibri', which refers to the act of making something difficult or even impossible by making unreasonable demands; effectively turning what should be simple into complex tasks through excessive requests for explanations and proofs. It is often associated with people who think they know everything about a given topic when in reality, they do not. Gowayajibri can lead others to feel baffled, confused, or overwhelmed by unnecessary complexity.
On the other hand, gowaya is a noun in Persian meaning explanation or justification for doing something, especially if it has drawn criticism or disapproval from others. In practice, a mujtahid would present a gowaya for his decision after considering several factors like circumstances, precedents, public opinion, religious texts, etc..
In summary, while jabir generally suggests expert knowledge, including technical expertise in Islamic law, gowayajibri relates to the tendency to make things overly complicated due to perceived superiority. Both concepts play significant roles in understanding how knowledge is acquired and applied in various fields, particularly within the context of traditional Islamic scholarship.
