Story Structure Explained
- Story structure, also called narrative structure, is how a story is organized. It's the way authors arrange events, characters, and settings to create a specific impact. It's a combination of plot and story elements.
- Plot refers to the events and their sequence in a story.
- Story elements are other parts of the story that contribute to the overall effect, such as characters (individuals or things represented as people) and setting (time and place).
- Plot and story elements together form the story's structure. A basic structure involves an introduction, rising action, climax, and falling action.
- Every story has a plot and characters. Something happens to someone.
- The plot has these five main parts:
- Opener: Introduces characters, setting, and the conflict.
- Incident: Presents the main problem or conflict for the main character (protagonist).
- Crisis: The conflict intensifies.
- Climax: The highest point of action, where a significant change occurs.
- Ending: Concludes the story, showing the results of the climax for the characters.
- "Snow White" and "The Three Little Pigs" are examples of stories using this structure.
- Important elements include: conflict, point of view, and tone.
- Conflict: Drives the story.
- Point of View: The perspective from which the story is told, significantly impacts the narrative.
- Tone: The feeling evoked by the story.
- Authors use structure to create the story's overall impression and meaning (theme).
- Changing any part of the structure (plot, characters, setting, conflict, point of view, or tone) changes the overall meaning.
-
Examples of structures:
- Narrative: A common, five-part structure (Opener, Incident, Crisis, Climax, Ending).
- Fichtean Curve: Multiple smaller crises overcome by the protagonist.
- Hero's Journey (Monomyth): A common mythological story structure with a call to adventure, refusing the call, a mentor, and a resurrection.
- Three Act Structure: Breaks the story into setup, confrontation and resolution.
