Study Notes

Self-Concept

  • Self-concept refers to everything you know about yourself, including your perception of yourself as a multi-dimensional (physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and moral) human being
  • It involves your current perception, as well as your past and future self, making it a dynamic representation of who you are
  • Self-concept has three essential components: physical characteristics, personality traits, and social identity

Components of Self-Concept

  • Physical characteristics describe your physical appearance, either positively or negatively (e.g., "I am fair-skinned" or "I am chubby")
  • Personality traits are stable characteristics that determine your behavior (e.g., "I am trustworthy" or "I am outgoing")
  • Social identity refers to the social group you belong to (e.g., "I am the daughter of Leni" or "I am a Muslim")
  • Self-esteem refers to a positive or negative self-evaluation of your self-concept
  • Self-worth refers to how much you value yourself
  • Self-efficacy refers to your belief and confidence in your ability to accomplish tasks and control your environment
  • Self-complexity refers to the different ways you think about yourself

Importance of Self-Knowledge

  • Knowing oneself is the beginning of wisdom, as it allows you to understand your strengths and weaknesses, passions and fears, and life's desires and dreams
  • Self-knowledge enables you to be aware of your eccentricities, habits, likes, and dislikes, and make better decisions and choices
  • It also leads to increased happiness, reduced inner conflict, and better understanding of others

Reflection Questions

  • Who am I as a person?
  • What makes me different from my friends and classmates?
  • How do I react when someone backbites me or says something bad about me?
  • If a classmate tells me that I am good at nothing, how will I react?
