Study Notes
- Scientific notation expresses any quantity: $a \times 10^n$
- Where $a$ is greater or equal to 1
- And $a$ is less than 10
- Where $n$ is an integer that can be positive or negative
- Example: 8,000,000,000.0 inhabitants is written as 8.0 x 10^9 inhabitants
- 1 mol = 6.02 x 10^23 elemental entities, like atoms, molecules, ions, etc.
- 2 x 6.02 x 10^23 = 1.204 x 10^24
Calculator Scientific Notation Usage
- For 8.0 x 10^9, enter 8, then EXP, then 9 on the calculator.
- To solve 6.02 x 10^23 - 8.0 x 10^9, the second term is negligible: 6.02 x 10^23 - 6.02 x 10^20 = 6.01398 x 10^23
- Example calculations:
- (1.5 x 10^9) x (4.932 x 10^-4) = 7,398
- (3.971 x 10^3) x (1.7 x 10^-3) = 6.7507
- (5.908 x 10^24) x (8.9 x 10^-16) = 5.25872 x 10^9
- (7.903 x 10^3) x (9.5 x 10^-5) = 78.0785
- 10^4 / 10^4 = 10^(4-4) = 1
