Pulse and the Cardiovascular System
- Pulse is the representation of the human cardiovascular system, measuring the state of the human cardiac cycle.
- Pulse is created by the blood's impact on the elastic walls of arteries when the heart pumps blood, resulting in a pressure wave.
Pulse Points in the Human Body
- There are nine specific points in the human body where the pulse can be felt and measured.
- These pulse points are:
Head and Neck
- Temporal artery: located in front of the tragus.
- Carotid artery: located below the jaw angle and beside the trachea.
Upper Limb
- Apical: located at the apex of the heart rather than an artery.
- Brachial artery: found on the inner side of the bicep muscle (medial border of the humerus).
- Radial artery: located on the bottom of the wrist near the base of the thumb.
Lower Limb
- Femoral artery: located just below the inguinal ligament (at the groin).
- Popliteal artery: located on the back of the knee in the popliteal fossa.
- Posterior tibial artery: palpated on the inside of the ankle, just behind and below the malleolus (ankle bone).
- Dorsalis pedis artery: located at the top of the foot in the first intermetatarsal space on the side of the tendon that moves the large toe.
