Study Notes
Passive Voice
- The passive voice emphasizes the recipient of an action, not the actor.
- It's frequently used to focus on the object or person experiencing the action, rather than the person performing the action.
- This is often used in formal writing or when the performer is unknown or unimportant.
Functions of Passive Voice
- Show interest in the person or object that experienced the action, not the performer.
- The most important part of the sentence becomes the subject.
Examples of Passive Voice
- The house was built in 1654. (Focuses on the house)
- The road is being repaired. (Focuses on the road)
- The passive voice is used frequently. (Focuses on the passive voice itself)
- All the cookies have been eaten. (Focuses on the cookies)
Passive vs. Active Voice
- Passive: A great deal of meaning is conveyed by a few well-chosen words.
- Active: A few well-chosen words convey a great deal of meaning.
Forming the Passive Voice
- Verb "to be" (conjugated) + past participle
- Examples:
- Affirmative: The house was built in 1899.
- Negative: The house wasn't built in 1899.
- Interrogative: Was the house built in 1899?
Using Passive with Other Verbs
- Use "to be" conjugated in the correct tense. Then add past participle of the main verb.
Passive Voice with Infinitives
- Used after modal verbs and verbs followed by infinitives.
- Examples:
- You have to be tested.
- John might be promoted.
Passive Voice with Gerunds
- Used after prepositions and verbs followed by gerunds.
- Examples:
- I remember being taught to drive.
- The children are excited about being taken to the zoo.
Alternative Ways to Form Passive Voice
- Using the verb "get" or "have."
- Examples:
- I must get my hair cut.
- We're having the house painted.
- Passive voice sentences often communicate that someone will do something for the subject, rather than the subject doing the actual work.
Passive to Active Conversion
- Switch to active voice by making the original recipient of the action the subject of the verb.
- Examples in converting passive sentences to active sentences:
- Past Tense: Mary kept her schedule meticulously. => Mary meticulously kept her schedule.
- Present Continuous: John is keeping my house tidy. => John keeps my house tidy.
- Past Continuous: The theater was keeping a seat for you. => The theater kept a seat for you.
