    Numbers

    • Cardinal numbers are those used for counting, such as 1, 2, 3.

    • Ordinal numbers in English end with “th” except for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
    • Decimals are read as the whole number, followed by "point" and then the decimal digits.

    Years, Decades and Centuries

    • Years are not read as whole numbers.
    • Years between 2000 and 2009 can be read as whole numbers, e.g. 2002 is read as "two thousand and two".
    • Years between 1 and 999 are usually read as whole numbers, e.g. 530 is read as "five hundred and thirty".
    • For decades of the 20th century, say "the + whole number + s", e.g. the fifties.
    • For centuries, always say the century, e.g. the eighteen fifties.

    Large Figures

    • Large figures are read in the same order as Spanish.
    • Remember to use the word "and" after "hundred", e.g. five hundred AND forty nine thousand.
    • English uses "billions" and "trillions" directly, without "mil millones".
