Numbers
- Cardinal numbers are those used for counting, such as 1, 2, 3.
- Ordinal numbers refer to position in a sequence, such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd.
- Ordinal numbers in English end with “th” except for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
- Decimals are read as the whole number, followed by "point" and then the decimal digits.
- The "." symbol can be used for decimals, periods (stops) and internet addresses.
Years, Decades and Centuries
- Years are not read as whole numbers.
- Years between 2000 and 2009 can be read as whole numbers, e.g. 2002 is read as "two thousand and two".
- Years between 1 and 999 are usually read as whole numbers, e.g. 530 is read as "five hundred and thirty".
- For decades of the 20th century, say "the + whole number + s", e.g. the fifties.
- For centuries, always say the century, e.g. the eighteen fifties.
Large Figures
- Large figures are read in the same order as Spanish.
- Remember to use the word "and" after "hundred", e.g. five hundred AND forty nine thousand.
- English uses "billions" and "trillions" directly, without "mil millones".
Abbreviations
- K is for hundreds
- M is for millions.
- B (or Bn) is for billions.
- T is for trillions.
Shortenings
- Shorten four-digit numbers by using the first two digits as one number and the two zeros as "hundred", e.g. 4,100 can be read as "forty-one hundred".
Mathematical Operations
- English uses the 12-hour clock with AM and PM.
- Military time is the 24-hour clock.
- When using military time, add the word “hours” at the end, e.g.,“I’ll meet you at fourteen hundred hours (14:00).”
Vocabulary
- "In the red" means in debt.
- "Bottom line" refers to net profit.
- "Quote" and "estimate" are used interchangeably to refer to a price for a service.
- "Invoice" is a bill or statement of charges for goods or services.
