Natural Numbers

  • Natural numbers are counting numbers that start from 1 and go on endlessly.
  • The smallest natural number is 1, and there is no largest natural number.
  • Natural numbers are used in many day-to-day activities, such as counting objects, students in a school, or people in a city.

Digits or Figures

  • Any number, no matter how large, can be written using ten symbols: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
  • Each of these symbols is called a digit or figure.
  • Even digits are: 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8. Odd digits are: 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9.

Place Value and Face Value of a Digit in a Number

  • The place value of a digit in a number is its value based on its position in the number.
  • The face value of a digit is its actual value.
  • Example: In the number 7302, the place value of the digit 7 is 7000, and its face value is 7.

Number, Numeral, and Numeration

  • A number is an idea or concept.
  • A numeral is a symbolic representation of a number.
  • Numeration is the process of writing a number in words.
  • Examples of numerals: 6, 28, 304, 7659.

Indian System of Numeration

  • In the Indian system, 100 × 100 i.e., 100000 is called a lakh.
  • 100 × 100000 i.e., 10000000 is called a crore, and so on.
  • The place value chart in the Indian system is divided into periods: ones, thousands, lakhs, crores, and so on.

Writing Numbers

  • To write numbers, we use the place value chart and insert commas after each period starting from the right.
  • Example: The number 29307546 is written as 2,93,07,546.

International System of Numeration

  • In the International system, 1000 × 1000 i.e., 1000000 is called a million.
  • 1000 × 1000000 i.e., 1000000000 is called a billion, and so on.
  • The place value chart in the International system is divided into periods: ones, thousands, millions, billions, and so on.

Reading and Writing Numbers

  • To read large numbers, we insert commas after each period starting from the right.
  • Example: The number 3,044,705,693 is read as "three billion forty-four million seven hundred five thousand six hundred ninety-three".

Use of Commas

  • Commas are used to separate periods in a number.
  • In the Indian system, the first comma comes after 3 digits from the right, and the next comma comes after every 2 digits.
  • In the International system, commas come after every 3 digits from the right.

Comparison of Numbers

  • To compare two or more numbers, we follow these steps:
    1. If the numbers of digits are unequal, the number with more digits is greater.
    2. If the numbers of digits are equal, compare the digits at the highest place value from the left.
  • Example: Compare the numbers 50777 and 48888. Since both numbers have the same number of digits, we compare the digits at the highest place value from the left.
