Literary Elements
- Literary elements are essential for creating a complete story
- They describe the who, what, when, where, why, and how of a story
- A story without these elements is incomplete
- Textual analysis is a research method to understand texts
- It involves understanding literal meaning, subtext, assumptions, symbolisms, and values
- Two approaches to textual analysis: analyzing literary elements and understanding historical context
- Literary elements can be found within the text itself
- Historical context requires external sources
Elements in a Text
- Characters: People, animals, creatures, or objects
- Characters drive the story through actions and speech
- A minimum of one character (protagonist) is needed
- Types of characters: protagonists (main), antagonists (create conflict), supporting (help tell the story)
- Plot: Sequence of events. A description of what happens, and why
- Setting: Time, duration, and location of the story; can be real or imagined
- Point of View (POV): Perspective of the narrator (first, second, or third person)
- Theme: Underlying message/topic; the core idea of a text, often related to social constructs
- Conflict: Struggle between two or more sides; a key part of the plot, based on differences in values, ideas, or motivations
- Climax: The turning point where the character makes a decision that resolves the conflict
