What is a Library?
- A layman's view: A building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, films, and recorded music available for borrowing by the public or members of an institution
- A literate's view: A library is a collection of materials (books or media) accessible for use (not just display). This can be a physical or virtual location, or both.
- A library professional's view: A library is a collection of resources organized by professionals. It provides physical or digital access to materials and services to provide education, information, or entertainment for diverse audiences, aiming to stimulate individual learning.
Ancient Times
- Libraries started as places to store records (business, legal, historical, and religious)
- Sumerians used clay tablets with cuneiform writing
- Babylonians (King Assurbanipal) collected over 30,000 tablets on diverse subjects
