Understanding ICT and its Relevance to Society
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT) refers to technologies used to support the processing, storing, securing, and transmitting of information.
Components of ICT
- People: individuals responsible for development, improvement, and maintenance of an ICT system
- Procedures: actions performed in a certain order and conditions to ensure an ICT system runs smoothly
- Hardware: physical or tangible parts (e.g. desktop, laptop)
- Software: computer programs and applications that provide sets of instructions to perform a task (e.g. word processing apps, spreadsheets, antivirus software, games)
- Data: can be processed, stored, and transmitted by an ICT
- Information: the result of processed, organized, and structured data
Social, Mobile, and Assisted Media
- Social Media: allows people to communicate with each other regardless of range, and share information through websites, apps, and accounts
- Types of Social Media:
- Social networking sites: enable real-time conversation via text
- Media sharing sites: enable sharing of multimedia content (e.g. photographs, audio files, or video)
- Discussion sites: designed for people who are avid fans of forums and debates
- Bookmarking and content curation sites: platforms for people searching for information or ideas to help with projects
