Importance of Human Perception
- Data visualization is successful when it encodes information in a manner that the human eye can discern and the brain can understand.
- Human perception plays a crucial role in understanding and interpreting visual information.
- Pre-attentive Processing: The brain can detect certain visual properties quickly and accurately, almost unconsciously. These properties are called pre-attentive attributes.
- Gestalt Principle: This principle explains how people organize visual elements into groups or unified wholes based on certain principles like proximity, similarity, continuation and closure.
Pre-attentive Visual Attributes
- Color: Human eyes can quickly identify a color, making it a powerful pre-attentive attribute.
- Shape: We can easily distinguish different shapes, as our brains process them pre-attentively.
- Conjunction of Properties: The combination of two or more properties (like shape and color) is not usually processed pre-attentively, requiring more cognitive effort.
Gestalt Principles
- Law of Proximity: Objects that are close together tend to be perceived as a group.
- Law of Similarity: Objects that are similar in color, size, shape, or orientation are perceived as belonging to the same group.
- Law of Continuation: Data lines that are connected or aligned are perceived as part of a single continuous whole.
- Law of Closure: Incomplete shapes are perceived as closed and complete, even if visually unfinished.
Human Perception Limitations
- Limited Focus: Humans have a limited focal point (2 degrees) for detailed perception.
- Selective Attention: We do not attend to everything we see, often drawn to contrasts and familiar patterns.
- Working Memory Limitations: Human working memory is limited, making it challenging to retain large amounts of information simultaneously.
