What Is General Education?

General education refers to a broad foundation of knowledge and skills that students acquire through their early years of schooling before specializing in specific academic fields later on. It is considered foundational because it provides the base upon which all other learning is built. In essence, general education comprises the core curriculum taught in primary and secondary schools, forming an indispensable foundation that provides students with fundamental knowledge and abilities they will need throughout their lives, regardless of the careers they choose later on.

Components of General Education

However, despite these challenges, many continue to believe in the value of general education as a cornerstone of any well-rounded educational system.
