Study Notes
Describing Force
- Force is defined as a push or pull that causes an object to move, stop, speed up, slow down, or change direction. It is the energy that makes things happen when applied.
- Movement occurs when an object changes its position from one place to another. Movement happens when a force is applied to an object.
- Soft objects change shape easily when a force is applied. They can bend, squish, or stretch. Examples include: rubber balls, pillows, clay, and sponges.
- Rigid objects are hard and do not change shape easily when a force is applied. They resist bending, squishing, and stretching. Examples include: rocks, metal spoons, chairs, and tables.
- A strong force can move heavy objects quickly, or cause objects to speed up quickly.
- A weak force moves lighter objects slowly, causing them to speed up or slow down slowly
- Forces can be represented by arrows in a diagram. The arrowhead shows the direction of the force
Learning Targets
- Students will learn to identify rigid and soft objects.
- Describe the characteristics of rigid and soft objects.
- Classify objects as rigid or soft.
- Define force as a push or pull acting on an object.
- Describe forces using arrows in various situations.
- Identify forces in everyday activities.
- Investigate how rigid and soft objects respond to applied forces.
Types of Questions (Day 1)
- Have you ever experienced being pushed or pulled by somebody?
- Have you encountered situations where objects were pushed or pulled?
- Have you been involved in pushing or pulling something or someone?
- In your experiences, was anyone hurt due to pushing or pulling?
Additional Information
- Students should assess themselves on learning targets before and after a lesson.
- Force is a push or pull, either used to move, stop, make it speed up or slow down, or change direction.
- Force is the energy that causes things to happen
- Different strengths of force result in different effects
- Force is all around us, it affects objects through everyday activities
