Study Notes
- Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread pain throughout the body for at least three months.
- Previously, doctors diagnosed fibromyalgia by checking for tender points. Newer guidelines from the American College of Rheumatology eliminate the tender point exam and focus on widespread pain.
- To meet the criteria for fibromyalgia diagnosis, you must have pain in at least four of the following areas: left upper region, right upper region, left lower region, right lower region, and axial region.
- Doctors may run various tests to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms, including blood tests, complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, cyclic citrullinated peptide test, rheumatoid factor, thyroid function tests, anti-nuclear antibody, celiac serology, and vitamin D.
- Medications like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, duloxetine, milnacipran, and gabapentin can help manage fibromyalgia symptoms and improve sleep.
- Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and counseling can also help manage the effects of fibromyalgia.
- Anterior knee joint pain is felt at the front of the knee, often centered around or behind the patella.
- Causes of anterior knee joint pain include patellofemoral pain syndrome, patellar tendonitis, chondromalacia, quadriceps tendonitis, iliotibial band syndrome, osteoarthritis, meniscal tears, and ACL injury.
- Prevention measures for anterior knee joint pain include strengthening muscles around the knee, maintaining a healthy weight, wearing proper footwear, using correct form during exercises, and avoiding prolonged periods of kneeling or squatting.
- An ankle sprain occurs when the ankle ligaments tear. It is a common injury and the leading reason for missed participation in athletics.
- Symptoms of an ankle sprain include pain, swelling, and difficulty walking.
- Treatment options for an ankle sprain include rest, ice, physical therapy, and pain medication. Surgery is a last resort.
- To prevent ankle sprains, focus on wearing proper footwear, maintaining good foot and ankle strength, and avoiding uneven surfaces.
