Environment and Its Components

• The term "environment" comes from the French word "Environ", meaning "surrounding".
• The environment consists of biotic and abiotic factors.
• Environment can be defined as "all the social, economical, physical and chemical factors that surrounds man" or "all abiotic and biotic components around man".

Components of Environment

• Hydrosphere: the total amount of water on a planet.
• Atmosphere: the cover of air that envelopes the earth.
• Lithosphere: the mantle of rocks constituting the earth's crust.
• Biosphere: the part of earth that supports life.

Environmental Science

• Environmental science is the interdisciplinary study of humanity's relationship with other organisms and the physical environment.
• Goals of environmental science include establishing general principles about how the natural world functions, reaching scientific consensus, and solving problems generated by society.

Scientific Method

• The scientific method involves recognizing a question, developing a hypothesis, designing and performing an experiment, analyzing data, and sharing new knowledge.

• Natural resources are limited, and can be classified into non-renewable and renewable resources.
• Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
