Everyday Circles

• Circles are ubiquitous and special shapes that can be found in everyday objects such as bowls, plates, soda cans, and wristwatches.

Circumference and Arc

• The circumference of a circle is the distance around the shape, represented by the red part of the plate.
• An arc is a small section of the circumference.

Measuring Circles

• A chord is a straight line that connects two parts of a circle.
• A diameter is a special chord that passes through the center of the circle.
• The radius is half the distance of the diameter and can be drawn vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

Outside & Sections of Circles

• A tangent is a line that touches the circle but is drawn outside of it.
• When two radii connect to an arc, they form a sector, which resembles a slice of pizza.
• The radii are the straight edges, and the curved part is the arc.
• A segment is formed when a chord connects with an arc, as seen in the guitar strings crossing through the circle.
