Bullying Definition
- Bullying is unwanted aggressive behavior, usually recurrent, that makes the target uncomfortable
- Common reasons for bullying include weight, gender, and disability
- Two typical bully types exist: the popular bully who uses bullying to maintain social status and the less popular bully who may struggle with self-esteem issues
- Both types are easily frustrated or aggressive and may have issues at home, problems with authority, and view violence positively
Bullying Categories
- Direct Bullying: obvious physical or verbal aggression, more common in boys
- Indirect Bullying: more discreet and primarily verbal, often involves rumors, more common in girls
- Cyberbullying: bullying through digital devices such as phones, tablets, or computers, often coupled with other forms and difficult to monitor
Bullying Actions
- Physical Bullying: hitting, kicking, threats of physical violence
- Verbal Bullying: name-calling, derogatory comments, teasing, insults, spreading rumors
- Relationship Bullying: a bully taking advantage of a relationship to force the victim to do things they don't want to do
Detecting Bullying
- Signs of bullying include unexplained injuries, missing or damaged personal items, changes in eating habits, declining grades, sudden changes in friendships, avoiding social situations, and self-destructive behavior
Helping Victims of Bullying
- Start by discussing the bullying; victims may be embarrassed and uncomfortable talking about it
- Help the victim block the bully on social networking sites, phone numbers, and email accounts
- Help the victim find support groups for bullied students, either in person or online
