Adverbs

  • Adverbs describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  • Example: The ancient monuments stood majestically (describes the verb stood).
  • Example: Some monuments were relatively famous (describes the adjective famous).
  • Example: The ancients built quite skillfully (describes the adverb skillfully).

Adverbs of Time

  • Answers the question of when or how often something happens.
  • Usually modifies a verb.
  • Examples: again, already, always, before, early, ever, finally, first, frequently, immediately, later, never, now, often, once, recently, seldom, sometimes, soon, still, today, and usually.
  • Example: I already knew that the Temple of Artemis was one of the Wonders of the Ancient World (describes the verb knew).

Adverbs of Place

  • Answers the question of where something happens.
  • Usually modifies a verb.
  • Examples: above, away, back, down, far, forward, here, in, inside, outside, there, and up.
  • Example: When the ancients looked inside, they saw that the temple was made totally of marble (describes the verb looked).

Adverbs of Manner

  • Answers the question of how or in what manner something happens.
  • Usually describes a verb.
  • Examples: bravely, carefully, clearly, gracefully, nicely, steadily, quickly, and softly.
  • Many adverbs of manner end in -ly and are formed by adding -ly to an adjective (sad-sadly).
  • Three common exceptions are fast, well, and hard.
