Masculine Nouns

  • Masculine nouns can belong to the 1st declension (they have the ending -а in the nominative singular): сирота, лелека, гайдамака, Микола, суддя
  • Masculine nouns can belong to the 2nd declension (they do not have the ending -а in the nominative singular): батько, край, день, степ

Feminine Nouns

Noun Declensions

  • Nouns in Ukrainian can be categorized into declensions based on their grammatical features.
  • There are four declensions: I, II, III, and IV.
  • Some nouns do not belong to any declension, including those that are invariable (bureau), those decline like adjectives (guard), and those only used in plural (doors).
  • First Declension includes nouns with feminine gender and the ending -a in the Nominative singular: сирота (orphan), зима (winter), сума (sum), земля (earth), пісня (song).
  • Second Declension includes nouns with masculine gender that do not have the ending -a in the Nominative singular: батько (father), край (edge), день (day), степ (steppe).
  • Second Declension also includes nouns with neuter gender that do not add the suffix -ат- or -ен- when declensed: село (village), поле (field), море (sea), знання (knowledge), сузір'я (constellation).
  • Third Declension contains nouns with feminine gender that do not have the ending -а in the Nominative singular: тінь (shadow), сіль (salt), піч (oven), мати (mother).
  • Fourth Declension includes nouns with neuter gender that add the suffix -ат- or -ен- when declensed: теля (calf) – теляти (calf's), курча (chick) – курчати (chick's), ім'я (name) – імені (name's).

Writing Roman Numerals

  • Use the Caps Lock key for uppercase letters.
  • The numeral 1 is represented by the letter I.
  • The numeral 2 is represented by two letters II.
  • The numeral 3 is represented by three letters III.
  • The numeral 5 is represented by the letter V.
