English Language Requirements for UK Visas
- Application Types Covered: This appendix outlines English language requirements for various visa applications (Student, Skilled Worker, Representative of an Overseas Business, T2 Minister of Religion, International Sportsperson, UK Ancestry, Global Talent, Start-up, Innovator Founder, Temporary Work - International Agreement, Domestic Worker in a Private Household, High Potential Individual, Settlement Family Life, Private Life, Scale Up, and Hong Kong British National (Overseas)).
Exemptions

Age 65+ or Under 18: Applicants aged 65 or over, or under 18, are exempt.

Disability: Applicants with a physical or mental condition preventing them from meeting the requirement are exempt.

Dependent Family Members (Over 18): Partners, parents, or dependent children over 18 are exempt if:
- They have 15 years continuous UK residence with permission.
- They demonstrate an English language speaking and listening qualification at A2 CEFR, ESOL Entry Level 2, or Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework (SCQF) Level 3.
- They provide confirmation from a qualified English teacher that they have attended an English language class for at least 75 guided learning hours in the 12 months before the application date, and the teacher believes the applicant is unlikely to reach B1 level through further study.
Meeting the Requirement
- Multiple Routes: The English language requirement is met by fulfilling any conditions from EL 3 to EL 6, or EL 7.1 to EL 8.4 (depending on the visa type).
- Student Visa: Students meet the requirement through EL 7.1-7.2, and additionally EL 8.1 to 8.4.
- Skilled Worker: Skilled worker applicants can meet conditions in EL 7.1 and 7.2 or through EL 9.1 (for specific professions).
- Other Routes: Many additional visa types (Start-up, Innovator, Scale-up, High Potential, Settlement Family Life, Private Life, International Sportsperson) satisfy requirements based on EL 7.1-7.2.
Previous Application

Additional Student Routes

Degree-Level Courses: Students applying for degree-level courses sponsored by a higher education provider who have assessed the applicant’s English language ability and indicated their compliance with English language standards on the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, are exempt.

B2 or Above CEFR: If an institute assesses and confirms an applicant's English knowledge at B2 level or above under the Common European Framework of Reference (in all four components—reading, writing, speaking, and listening), the student is exempt.
