Uganda Clinical Guidelines 2023

The overall goal of Uganda's health system is to provide accessible, equitable and quality services to the population, aiming to promote healthy and productive life.
The Ugandan health system faces a high burden of infectious diseases that remain major causes of morbidity and mortality, including HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, LRTIs, malnutrition, and meningitis.
New threats keep emerging, including epidemics of hepatitis B, yellow fever, hemorrhagic fevers, COVID-19, and nodding disease.
Non-communicable conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, cancer, and mental disorders are also increasing.
The push towards universal health coverage, including universal access to Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) and focusing on neonatal, child, adolescent, and maternal health, is placing more demands on a health system with limited resources.
The Uganda Clinical Guidelines manual is designed to improve the standards of service delivery by providing practical information for diagnosing and managing common health conditions in Uganda.
The guidelines are based on scientific evidence, cost-effectiveness, and prioritization of conditions to maximize health benefits with limited resources.
Regular updates of clinical guidelines and essential medicines lists are key interventions in the Health Sector Development Plan 2015-2020, promoting the appropriate use of health products and technologies.
The 2023 Uganda Clinical Guidelines were developed with contributions from various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health Update Task Force, government parastatals, medical consultants, district health workers, the private sector, the Uganda Reproductive Maternal Child and Adolescent Health Improvement Project (URMCHIP), and development partners.
