Types of Questions and Question Words in Greek

Questioning is a fundamental aspect of human communication and cognitive development. It's through questioning that we seek information, clarify our understanding, challenge assumptions, and deepen our learning. There are various types of questions, each serving different purposes. For instance, open-ended questions often encourage active thinking by requiring multiple correct answers, while closed-ended questions typically demand only one specific answer.

In the context of Greek, there is a set of pronouns used solely with interrogatives and negations (as opposed to declaratives) known as question words, which have their own special forms called interrogative particles. These question words serve as placeholders within sentences to introduce a question or negation. They can be translated literally as what?, where? etc., indicating that a person has asked something and awaits the response from another person. Here are some examples of these question words:

• Where do you want to go next?
• What kind of food do you like best?
• Why did you choose this college over others?

Questions help build relationships because they demonstrate concern and interest in someone else's life or experiences. By asking questions, individuals show respect for other people's opinions, beliefs, and feelings, fostering connections between them.
