Types of Mathematics Overview

Algebra uses variables and equations involving these variables to solve problems. If you get paid $10 per hour and work five hours, algebra helps you find out how much money you make by multiplying your pay rate by the time you worked together ($10 x 5 = $50).

Geometry

Geometry deals with properties of shapes, such as angles, sides, and vertices. If you know that all triangles have three sides and three angles, geometry lets you tell whether something is a triangle just from looking at its shape.

Measurement

Measurement means figuring out how big things are in terms of length, weight, volume, area, temperature, or other units. If you want to build a house, measurement tells you how many bricks you need for the walls, floors, roof, etc..

People who understand math well do better on tests like the SAT, because they're able to think through math problems more easily.
