Types of Grapes

• Vitis vinifera (common grapevine): Native to the Mediterranean region, central Europe, southwest Asia, Morocco, and northern Iran.
• Two subspecies:
  • vinifera silvestris (wild vines)
  • vinifera sativa (cultivated vines) which further breaks down into Middle Eastern and Mediterranean vines.
• Can grow up to 10 meters if not pruned.
• Broad leaves.
• Used for fruit, wine, and shade.
• Produces enough new growth annually to cover walkways or create shade.
• Requires regular pruning and careful training.
• Needs full sun, moderate water, and good drainage.
• Can remain productive for 50 years or more.

Vitis labrusca

• Robust and aromatic grape species native to North America.
• Used for table grapes, wine grapes, grape-flavored soft drinks, and jelly.
• Concord grapes (a variety of Vitis labrusca) have dark blue or purple skin often covered in a light-colored bloom.
• Large seeds and a strong aroma.
• Concord variety debuted in 1854, named after the Massachusetts village of Concord.
