Flashcards

Simple Squamous Epithelium

A single layer of flattened cells, found lining blood vessels and lungs. Allows for easy diffusion of gases and small molecules.

Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Multiple layers of cells, with the outer layer flattened. Protects underlying tissues from stress, abrasion, and dryness.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

A single layer of cube-shaped cells, involved in secretion and absorption in ducts and tubes.

Fibroblast Cells (Areolar Tissue)

Cells that provide structural support, especially in soft tissues, producing collagen fibers.

Study Notes

Epithelial Tissue

  • Squamous Epithelium: consists of flattened cells, found in inner lining of blood vessels and lungs, allows diffusion of gases and small molecules.
  • Simple Squamous Epithelium: single-layer flattened cells, found in inner lining of blood vessels and lungs.
  • Stratified Squamous Epithelium: multiple layers of cells, outer layer squamous, provides protection from stress, abrasion, and desiccation, found in linings of esophagus, mouth, and vagina.

Cuboidal Epithelium

  • Simple Cuboidal Epithelium: single layer of cube-like cells, secretes and absorbs materials through ducts or tubes, found in linings of kidney and intestines.
  • Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium: multiple layers of cells, found in most glands, selectively absorbs and secretes materials into blood or lymph vessels.

Columnar Epithelium

  • Simple Columnar Epithelium: single layer of cells, taller than they are wide, found in intestines and stomach, absorbs nutrients and secretes enzymes and mucous.
  • Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium: single layer of cells, but appears multiple layers due to size difference, found in trachea and respiratory tract.

Transitional Epithelium

  • Consists of multiple cells that can change shape depending on pressure experienced by the organ, found in bladder and urethra.

Connective Tissue

  • Fibroblast Cells (Areolar Tissue): provides structural support in softer portions of the body, has collagen that forms thick and tough fibers.
  • Fat Cells (Adipose Tissues): spherical cells that contain oils or fats, stores energy for future consumption, releases fat molecules into bloodstream when needed.

Connective Tissues in the Skeletal System

  • Cartilage: soft, gel-like padding between bones, protects joints and facilitates movement.
  • Ligament: elastic band of tissue that connects bone to bone, provides stability to the joint.
  • Tendon: band of tissue that connects muscle to bone.

Cartilage Cells

  • Chondrocyte: rigid and stronger connective tissue, secretes collagen and long chains of sugar molecules.

Plant Tissues

  • Meristematic Tissues: produce cells that quickly differentiate and become permanent tissue, found in apical, lateral, and intercalary meristems.
  • Apical Meristems: found in root tip and stem tip, responsible for growth in length.
  • Lateral Meristems: found in lateral sides of roots and stems, responsible for growth in girth or thickness of plants.
  • Intercalary Meristems: found in bases of leaf blades and nodes, responsible for increase in length of leaf blade.

Plant Organ Systems

  • Shoot System: portion of the plant that grows above the ground, responsible for absorption of light, reproduction, and gas exchange.
  • Root System: underground portion of the plant, responsible for support, absorption of water, and dissolution of minerals.
