Types of Chemical Reactions
-
Synthesis (S) Reaction: Two or more reactants combine to form a single product.
- Example: 2 Na + Cl₂ → NaCl
-
Decomposition (D) Reaction: A compound breaks down into its separate elements.
- Example: 2 H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂
-
Single Replacement (SR) Reaction: One element replaces another element in a compound.
- Example: 2 Al + 3 CuCl₂ → 3 Cu + 2 AlCl₃
-
Double Replacement (DR) Reaction: The elements in two compounds switch places to form two new compounds.
- Example: Pb(NO₃)₂ + 2NaI → PbI₂ + 2NaNO₃
-
Neutralization (N) or Acid-Base Reaction: An acid and a base react to form a salt and water.
- Example: H₂SO₄ + Ca(OH)₂ → CaSO₄ + 2H₂O (sulfuric acid + calcium hydroxide → calcium sulfate + water)
-
Combustion (C) Reaction: A compound/element reacts with oxygen to produce an oxide and heat energy.
- Examples:
- CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
- 2C₂H₆ + 7O₂ → 4CO₂ + 6H₂O
- Examples:
