    Study Notes

    Types of Changes

    • Changes are classified into two categories: Reversible and Irreversible Changes
    • Reversible changes are those that can be reversed by changing the conditions

    Reversible Changes

    • Examples: melting of ice, freezing of water, vaporisation of water, condensation of water vapour
    • Ice melts on being heated and water freezes on being cooled
    • Changes in state of matter are reversible
    • Examples: glowing of an electric bulb, heating of an electric iron or a heater
    • The glow of the bulb vanishes and the iron cools when the electric current or heater is switched off

    Irreversible Changes

    • A change is said to be irreversible when it cannot be reversed by changing the conditions
    • Examples: curdling of milk, charring of sugar, burning of coal, wood, paper or kerosene
    • Milk can be changed into curd, but curd cannot be changed back into milk
    • Charred sugar cannot be changed back into original sugar even when cooled
    • Other examples: photosynthesis in plants, digestion of food in our body, clotting of blood, growth of plants and animals
