Mountains

Turkey is surrounded by mountains on three sides:
- The Pontic Mountains to the north, along the Black Sea coast
- The Taurus Mountains to the south, along the Mediterranean coast
- The Eastern Anatolia Mountains to the east
The highest peak is Mount Ararat, a dormant volcano in the Eastern Anatolia Region, with an elevation of 5,137 meters (16,854 ft)
Other notable mountain ranges include the Anti-Taurus Mountains, the Anatolian Plateau, and the Kurdish Mountains

Regions

Turkey is divided into seven geographic regions:
1. Marmara Region: northwestern Turkey, including Istanbul and the Bosphorus Strait
2. Aegean Region: western Turkey, along the Aegean Sea
3. Mediterranean Region: southern Turkey, along the Mediterranean Sea
4. Central Anatolia Region: central Turkey, including the capital city Ankara
5. Eastern Anatolia Region: eastern Turkey, including Mount Ararat
6. Southeastern Anatolia Region: southeastern Turkey, along the border with Syria
7. Black Sea Region: northern Turkey, along the Black Sea coast
Each region has distinct cultural, economic, and geographical characteristics

Cities

Ankara: the capital city, located in Central Anatolia Region
Istanbul: the largest city, located in Marmara Region, straddling Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait
Izmir: a major port city, located in Aegean Region
Bursa: a city in Marmara Region, known for its historic Ottoman architecture
Adana: a city in Mediterranean Region, known for its agriculture and industry
Antalya: a city in Mediterranean Region, known for its tourism and beaches
Trabzon: a city in Black Sea Region, known for its historic harbor and trade routes
