Eye Socket Anatomy

The eye socket, also known as the orbit, is a bony cavity in the skull that contains and protects the eye. It consists of seven bones: frontal, lacrimal, palatine, sphenoid, ethmoid, zygomatic, and maxilla. Here are some key features of the eye socket:

Frontal Bone

This bone forms part of the roof and forehead. In children, the frontal bone fuses between 16 and 18 years old for girls and between 18 and 20 years old for boys.

Lacrimal Bone

This bone gives the orbit its characteristic tear shape and makes up the medial wall of the orbit. The lacrimal bone also contains the nasolacrimal duct, through which tears flow into the nose.

Palatine Bone

This bone forms the posterior part of the lateral orbital wall.

Sphenoid Bone

Located behind the ethmoid bone, the sphenoid bone contributes significantly to the formation of the orbit, especially in its anterior parts.

Ethmoid Bone

A small bone situated between the eyes, the ethmoid bone forms part of the orbital floor and contributes to the formation of the lateral walls.

Zygomatic Bone

Known informally as the cheekbone, the zygomatic bone forms the lateral wall of the orbit.

Maxillary Bone

This bone forms the inferior orbital rim.

The eye socket provides protection, structural support, and allows movement of the eyeball within the socket while ensuring protection of the delicate structures behind it.
