The word 'trigonometry' comes from two Greek root words: 'tri', meaning three; and 'gonai', which means corners or angles. Thus, trigonometry literally translates to three-corned geometry. Some common terms used in trigonometry include sine, cosine, tangent, secant, cosecant, cotangent, inverse sine, inverse cosine, inverse tangent, inverse secant, inverse cosecant, and inverse cotangent. These functions form the basis of trigonometric calculations.
Trigonometry can also refer to any of several systems of coordinates used by navigators and photographers, especially celestial coordinate systems based on equatorial circles and polar circles. Historically, trigonometry was closely related to plane surveying and civil engineering. But its most important contribution to human understanding came when mathematicians learned how to apply these principles to spherical surfaces...thus making a great leap forward in the study of the heavens.
