Study Notes
Trigemino-thalamic Tract
- Pathway of crude sensibility from contralateral part of head, transmitting sensations of heat, cold, pain, crude touch, and diffuse pressure
- Analogous to spino-thalamic tract of spinal nerves
- Pathway of "quick pain" from range of cranial nerves
- Consists of three neurons:
- First neuron: trigeminal ganglion (CN V), geniculate ganglion (CN VII), superior and inferior ganglia of CN IX and X
- Second neuron: spinal nucleus of trigeminal nerve, whose axons cross over in brainstem and accompany spino-thalamic tract
- Third neuron: contralateral ventral posteromedial nucleus of thalamus, whose axons form thalamocortical tract and project to postcentral gyrus
Trigemino-reticular Tract
- Pathway of "slow pain" transmitted within cranial nerves
- Analogous to spino-reticular tract of spinal nerves
- Consists of two neurons:
- First neuron: trigeminal ganglion (CN V), geniculate ganglion (CN VII), superior and inferior ganglia of CN IX and X
- Second neuron: spinal nucleus of trigeminal nerve, whose axons cross over in brainstem and continue to reticular formation, part of the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS)

Description
This quiz covers the trigemino-thalamic tract, a neuronal pathway responsible for transmitting crude sensibility from the contralateral part of the head, including sensations of heat, cold, pain, crude touch, and diffuse pressure. It involves cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X.
