Study Notes
Types of Waves
- There are two main types of waves.
Transverse Waves
- Definition: A transverse wave is a wave that vibrates perpendicularly to the direction of travel.
- Example: A wave on a jump rope is a transverse wave because the rope vibrates up and down as the wave travels along the rope.
Waves in Liquids
- Liquids can transmit both transverse and longitudinal waves.
Earth's Outer Core
- The Earth's outer core is liquid because seismic waves can pass through it.
Rayleigh Waves
- Rayleigh waves are a type of surface wave that travels along the surface of the Earth.
Ocean Waves
- Ocean waves that travel along the surface of the water are a type of surface wave.
Mechanical Waves
- Mechanical waves are waves that require a medium to travel and are characterized by the transfer of energy from particle to particle.
- They can be either transverse or longitudinal.
Electromagnetic Waves
- Electromagnetic waves are waves that can travel through a vacuum and do not require a medium.
- They differ from mechanical waves in that they do not require a medium to travel.
Transverse vs. Longitudinal Waves
- Transverse waves vibrate perpendicularly to the direction of travel, while longitudinal waves vibrate parallel to the direction of travel.
