Speed Limits on Highways
- Maximum speed limit in business or residence districts: 30 miles per hour
- Maximum speed limit in other locations: 55 miles per hour
- County or municipality can set a maximum speed limit of 20 or 25 miles per hour in residence districts after an investigation
Minimum Speed Limits
- Minimum speed limit on highways with four lanes or more: 40 miles per hour
- Minimum speed limit on highways with posted speed limit of 70 miles per hour: 50 miles per hour
Special Conditions
- School buses must not exceed posted speed limits at any time
- Drivers must reduce speed when:
- Approaching and crossing an intersection or railway grade crossing
- Approaching and going around a curve
- Approaching a hill crest
- Traveling upon a narrow or winding roadway
- A special hazard exists with respect to pedestrians or other traffic, or due to weather or highway conditions
Minimum Speed Requirements
- Drivers must not drive at a speed that impedes or blocks normal traffic movement, except when necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law
Work Zone Areas
- Drivers must not exceed posted maximum speed limit in work zone areas
