It is the fourth largest industry worldwide.

International Tourist Arrivals

The number of international travelers (tourists traveling outside their home country) has grown rapidly.
In 2011, there were 938 million international tourist arrivals.
In 2012, there were 980 million international tourist arrivals, a 4.4% increase over the previous year.
In 2013, there were 1.087 billion international tourist arrivals, a 5.0% increase over the previous year.
In 2014, there were 1.138 billion international tourist arrivals, a 4.5% increase over the previous year.
In 2015, there were 1.184 billion international tourist arrivals, a 4.4% increase over the previous year.
In 2016, there were 1.235 billion international tourist arrivals, a 4.3% increase over the previous year.
In 2017, there were 1.322 billion international tourist arrivals, a 7.0% increase over the previous year.

UNWTO Long-term Outlook

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) forecasts that international tourist arrivals worldwide will reach 1.8 billion by 2030.
The market share of emerging economies, such as India, China, and Russia, is expected to reach 57% by 2030.
The UNWTO also forecasts that the Travel and Tourism industry growth will benefit all regions worldwide by 2030.
