Study Notes
Total Body Water
- At birth, total body water is up to 85% (70-80%) of body weight.
- At 1 year of age, total body water is 70-75%
- Adult male total body water is about 60%
- Adult female total body water is 50-55%
- Extreme age (elderly) total body water is 40-45%
Body Fluid Compartments
- Total body water (TBW) is divided into extracellular fluid (ECF) and intracellular fluid.
- ECF is further divided into interstitial fluid (ISF) and intravascular fluid.
- ISF (3/4 ECF) accounts for 3/4 of the total extracellular fluid.
- Intravascular fluid(1/4 ECF)accounts for 1/4 of the total extracellular fluid.
Composition of Fluid Compartments
- Table 49-2 details the composition of different fluid compartments (intracellular and extracellular) in miliequivalents per liter (mEq/L).
- Sodium levels in extracellular fluid are approximately 145 mEq/L and 10 mEq/L in intracellular fluid.
- Potassium levels are 4 mEq/L in extracellular fluid and 140 mEq/L in intracellular fluid
- Calcium levels in extracellular fluid are approximately 3 mEq/L with less than 1 mEq/L in intracellular fluid.
- Chloride levels in extracellular fluid are about 105 mEq/L and 4 mEq/L in intracellular fluid.
- Bicarbonate levels are 24 mEq/L in extracellular fluid and 10 mEq/L in intracellular fluid
- Phosphorus levels are approximately 75 mEq/L in intracellular fluid and 2mEq/L in extracellular fluids
- Protein level variations between compartments exist
