Flashcards

Total Body Water (TBW)

The total amount of water in a person's body, varying by age and sex.

Extracellular Fluid (ECF)

Fluid outside cells, constituting about 1/3 of total body water.

Intracellular Fluid (ICF)

Fluid within cells, making up about 2/3 of total body water.

Age-related TBW variation

Percentage of body weight comprised of total body water changes with age.

Study Notes

Total Body Water

  • At birth, total body water comprises 70-80% of body weight.
  • At 1 year of age, it's 70-75%.
  • In adults, males have approximately 60% and females 50-55%.
  • Extreme ages (40-45%) have between 40-45% of total body water.

Body Fluid Compartments

  • Total body water (TBW) is divided into intracellular and extracellular fluid (ECF).
  • Extracellular fluid is subdivided into intravascular (plasma) and interstitial fluid.
  • Approximately 1/3 of TBW (or 2/3 of extracellular fluid - ECF) is in the intravascular spaces.
  • 3/4 of extracellular fluid (ECF) is interstitial fluid.
  • 1/4 of ECF is intravascular fluid.

Fluid Composition

  • Table 49-2 shows the composition of different body fluid compartments.
  • Values are in milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L) or grams per deciliter (g/dL).
  • Gram-molecular weights of important compounds like sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium chloride, and proteins are given with their concentrations in different body fluid compartments. Examples include intracellular sodium levels, extracellular sodium levels, and interstitial sodium levels.
