Study Notes

Torque Wrenches

  • A torque wrench is a precision tool used to apply a specific amount of pressure to a nut or bolt during installation.
  • It consists of a torque-indicating handle and an adapter or attachment.
  • The wrench measures the amount of turning or twisting force applied to a nut, bolt, or screw.
  • Before each use, the torque wrench should be visually inspected for damage.

Types of Torque Wrenches

  • Deflecting beam torque wrench (not shown)
  • Dial indicating torque wrench
  • Micrometer torque wrench (preset to the desired torque and gives a sharp impulse or breakaway "click" when reached)
  • Electronic torque wrench

Strap Wrenches

  • A strap wrench is a valuable tool for AMTs, used to grip aircraft components without damaging them.
  • It uses a plastic-covered fabric strap to grip the part.

Impact Drivers

  • An impact driver is used in certain applications to break loose stubborn fasteners.
  • It uses cam action to impart a high amount of torque in a sharp impact.
  • The drive portion of the impact driver can accept different drive bits and sockets.

Metal Cutting Tools

  • Hand snips are used for cutting metal, with different types for different purposes (straight, curved, hawksbill, aviation snips).
  • Snips should not be used to cut heavy sheet metal.

Wrenches

  • A combination wrench has a box end on one end and an open-end wrench of the same size on the other.
  • A ratcheting box-end wrench can be used to remove a nut from a bolt.
  • A socket wrench consists of a socket and a handle, with many types of handles, extensions, and attachments available.
  • Sockets can have fixed or detachable handles, and come in sets to fit different types of handles.
