Study Notes
Tooth Structure
- The tooth has three hard tissues: enamel, dentine, and cementum.
- Dentine forms the bulk of the tooth structure and is produced by the pulp.
- The pulp is the soft tissue within the tooth that provides innervation and blood supply.
Pulp Chamber and Canal
- The pulp consists of two parts: the pulp chamber and the pulp canal.
- The pulp chamber is located inside the dental crown, while the pulp canal is located inside the root.
Roots of Teeth
- The number of roots varies: maxillary and mandibular premolars have one root, while maxillary premolars have two roots that bifurcate, and mandibular molars have three roots that trifurcate.
- A multirooted tooth has a trunk root that branches into roots.
Tooth Surfaces
- Teeth can have 4 or 5 surfaces: labial, buccal, lingual, occlusal, and proximal.
- The labial surface faces the lip, the buccal surface faces the cheek, and the lingual surface faces the tongue.
- The occlusal surface is the biting surface, and the proximal surface faces adjacent teeth.
- The mesial surface faces the median line, and the distal surface faces away from the median line.
Divisions of the Crown and Root
- The crown and root can be divided into thirds for descriptive purposes.
- Teeth can be divided into incisal, mesial, distal, buccal, and lingual surfaces.
Angle and Point
- The junction of two surfaces forms an angle, which can be named according to the surfaces that meet (e.g., labial-mesio angle).
- The junction of three surfaces forms a point, which can be named according to the surfaces that meet (e.g., Incisal-linguo-mesio point).
