Study Notes
Pliers
- Pliers are useful for pulling, twisting, bending and shaping wires
- They can be used to position small components
- Pliers can cut wire and provide excellent grab control and long reach for fine work
- Long nose pliers are useful for reaching into confined spaces
- Needle nose pliers have a narrow jaw designed for intricate work
Tweezers
- Tweezers provide more gripping precision than pliers
- They are ideal for positioning surface mount components
Diagonal Cutters
- Designed to cut copper wire
- Easily cuts "soft" metals like copper, brass, aluminum, and iron
- The beveled edge leaves a sharp spike on the wire because the jaws force the wire to break apart
- Useful for cutting wires and component leads
Flush Cut Cutters & Shear Cutters
- Designed to leave a smoother surface after cuts
- The reduced beveled edge requires less force to cut through wire than diagonal cutters
- Blades are very fragile compared to a diagonal cutter
Wire Strippers
- Strip the outer insulation off of wire without cutting the wire
- Adjustable or fixed, manual or automatic
Screwdrivers
- Used for driving screws or bolts with special slots
- Rotate other machine elements
- Consists of a head or tip (turns screw), a shaft, and a handle (applies torque to rotate the tip)
- Can be manual or powered
Soldering Iron
- Supplies heat to melt solder
- Solder will flow into the joint between two work pieces
- Low power irons: 15 to 40 Watts – range $15 to $80
- Temperature-controlled irons: 0 oC to 350 oC – $160 ↑ ↑
Types of Desoldering Tools
- Used to remove solder from a printed circuit board
- Required to remove components from a circuit for troubleshooting, repairing, replacement, or salvage.
Desoldering Tools
- De-soldering pump: Prime the pump, release to vacuum up liquid solder. Only $5 to $12, but requires cleaning.
- Solder wick: Finely braided 18 to 42 AWG copper wire coated with rosin flux, “absorb” solder. Rolls start at $5.
- De-soldering station: Hot air pump, also called a rework station. Expensive, $150 to more than $1000.
All-in-One Workstations
- Combination of soldering and desoldering tools
PCB Stand & Bench-top Vise
- Helping “Third Hand” holds the PCB securely in place
- Useful during soldering and inspections
Solderless Breadboards
- Construction base for reusable prototyping of electronics
- A perforated plastic cover hides a special pattern of metallic strips underneath.
- Component leads and wires are inserted into specific holes to create simple circuits.
Breadboard Limitations
-
Current and voltage limitations
- Board overheats & melts with high current/voltage
- Arcing may occur between nearby connector rows
-
Frequency limitations
- High frequencies (>1 MHz range): noisy responses
- Wires can start to look like inductors and capacitors
- Very low frequencies: contact resistance is a problem
- Metal contacts wear out with repeated use
-
Circuit complexity limitations
- Overflowing connectors can easily be disturbed
- Troubleshooting becomes difficult to manage
- Contact resistance develops over time
