Study Notes

TOGAF Overview

  • TOGAF is the Open Group Architecture Framework
  • It's a detailed method and tools for building enterprise architecture
  • It's freely usable by any organization
  • TOGAF is a framework that can create deliverables on its own, or be used with supporting frameworks
  • TOGAF 8.1 covers Technology, Application, Data, and Business Architecture
  • TOGAF 7 only covers Technology Architecture
  • TOGAF components include ADM (Architecture Development Method), Enterprise Continuum, and Resource Base

ADM (Architecture Development Method)

  • ADM is an iterative process running across the entire project, including between phases and within phases
  • Key decisions need to be made for each iteration
    • Scope
    • Organization's Enterprise Continuum resources
  • ADM consists of eight phases
  • Each phase is defined by Objectives, Approach, Inputs, Steps, and Outputs
  • The preliminary phase involves confirming all involved parties are committed and defines architecture principles, assumptions, methodologies and evaluation procedures

ADM Preliminary Phase

  • Make sure all stakeholders are committed
  • Define architecture principles and assumptions
  • List personnel (with responsibilities and locations)
  • Define the framework and methodology
  • Define procedures for evaluation

ADM Phase A: Architecture Vision

  • Validate business principles, goals, and strategic drivers
  • Define the scope and components of the architecture effort
  • Define relevant stakeholders (with objectives and concerns)
  • Define key business requirements
  • Secure formal approval

ADM Phase B: Business Architecture

  • Describe the current baseline using modeling tools like UML
  • Develop target architecture by defining the strategy and aspects of organizational and business needs
  • Identify and analyze gaps between baseline and target business architectures

ADM Phase C: Information System Architecture

  • Create target architecture definitions covering data and/or application system domains
  • Define data types, sources, and entities
  • Define application types and needs

ADM Phase D: Technology Architecture

  • Develop technology architecture
  • Identify what relevant technology architecture resources are available within TOGAF

ADM Phase E: Opportunities and Solutions

  • Evaluate and select implementation options (build vs. buy vs. reuse)
  • Define the key strategic changes required and top-level work packages/projects
  • Develop an overall implementation and migration strategy

ADM Phase F: Migration Planning

  • Prioritize implementation projects
  • Develop a detailed implementation plan

ADM Phase G: Implementation Governance

  • Formulate recommendations for implementation projects
  • Maintain appropriate governance functions while the system transitions
  • Ensure compliance with the defined architecture

ADM Phase H: Architecture Change Management

  • Monitor new technologies and business changes
  • Determine if a new architecture evolution cycle should be initiated

ADM Architecture Requirements Management

  • This isn't a static set of requirements
  • It's a dynamic process. Changes to these requirements are documented and utilized within the relevant phases of ADM
  • Includes market shifts, new legislation etc.

Enterprise Continuum

  • A repository of reusable architectural building blocks.
  • Contains work-in-progress and previously completed work.
  • Includes reference models and patterns.
  • In the development of a Technology Architecture, the architecture can be TOGAF's own Foundation Architecture; in the development of a business architecture, it might be a reference model for e-Commerce from broader industry practice.
  • TOGAF views enterprise architecture as a continuum ranging from highly generic to highly specific. The continuum consists of Foundation, Common Systems, Industry, and Organizational Architectures. Also includes Solutions which links into these architectural continuums with corresponding products, services, and systems.
