Questions and Answers

What is the primary role of fibroblasts in injury repair?

 • To detect nerve damage
 • To initiate inflammation
 • To regenerate muscle tissue
 • To produce collagen and contribute to scar tissue formation (correct)

Nerve cells are capable of dividing and replacing damaged tissue.

False (B)

What type of tissue forms within 3-5 days after an injury as part of the healing process?

granulation tissue

Within 24 hours of an injury, leukocytes will start to come to the area and initiate the __________ process.

Match the cellular component to its function in the injury repair process:

Leukocytes = Initiate inflammation and fight infection Fibroblasts = Lay down collagen for scar tissue Nerve endings = Signal pain and injury Skin cells = Rapidly divide and help in surface repair
Signup and view all the answers

Study Notes

Injury Repair by New Connective Tissue Replacement

Immediate Effects of Injury

 • Finger is sliced during cooking, causing blood to come out
 • Tissues cut through: fingernail, epithelial (skin), muscle tissue, and nerve endings

Nerve and Skin Cell Behavior

 • Nerve cells do not divide
 • Skin cells divide frequently

Inflammation Process (Within 24 hours)

 • Leukocytes arrive at the area
 • Fibroblasts come to the area and lay down collagen and components that will form a scar
 • Connective tissue starts to repair the injury

Scar Tissue Formation (3-5 Days)

 • A new scar tissue forms to fill in the place of nerve and new skin tissue
 • Granulation tissue (pinkish tissue) is formed, typically visible around the scab
