Alkanes, Alkenes, Alkynes, Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are organic compounds that consist solely of carbon and hydrogen atoms. These molecules play a crucial role in our daily lives as they serve as fuel, lubricants, and raw materials for various industries. Hydrocarbons are primarily sourced from petroleum and natural gas.

There are several types of hydrocarbons based on the types of bonds between their carbon atoms. Here, we discuss alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Alkanes (Paraffins)

Alkanes, also known as paraffins, are the simplest hydrocarbons, formed exclusively of single bonds between carbon atoms. Their molecular formula can be represented as (C_nH_{2n+2}), where (n) represents the number of carbon atoms. Alkanes are nonpolar molecules, meaning they do not dissolve easily in water but readily mix with other alkanes. Examples of alkanes include methane ((C_1H_4)), ethane ((C_2H_6)), propane ((C_3H_8)), and octane ((C_8H_{18})).

Alkenes (Olefins)

Alkenes contain carbon-carbon double bonds in their structure, resulting in a planar molecular geometry. The general formula for alkenes is (C_nH_{2n}). When (n = 2), the smallest alkene is ethene ((C_2H_4)), also known as ethylene. Other examples include propene ((C_3H_6)) and butene ((C_4H_8)).

Alkynes (Acetylenes)

Alkynes consist of carbon-carbon triple bonds and follow the formula (C_nH_{2n-2}). One of the simplest alkynes is ethyne ((C_2H_2)), commonly referred to as acetylene. Propyne ((C_3H_4)) and butyne ((C_4H_6)) are also examples of alkynes.

Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Aromatic hydrocarbons, also known as arenes, have unique stability due to their ring-like structure. The simplest aromatic hydrocarbon is benzene, which is composed of six carbon atoms in a ring with alternating single and double C–C bonds. Other aromatic hydrocarbons include toluene ((C_7H_8)), ethylbenzene ((C_8H_10)), and xylene ((C_8H_{10})).
