Study Notes

Second Law of Thermodynamics

  • It is impossible to convert all absorbed heat into work in a cyclic process.
  • A heat engine is a system that extracts heat from a source and converts some of it into useful work.
  • Heat is transferred from a high-temperature source to a lower-temperature sink.
  • Thermal efficiency is the fraction of heat input converted to net work output.
    • Formula: η = Wnet / QA
    • η = 1 - |QR| / QA

Carnot Cycle

  • An idealized heat engine that operates on a reversible cycle.
  • Composed of four steps: two isothermal and two adiabatic.
  • Formula for Carnot engine efficiency: η = 1 - Tmin / Tmax

Additional Notes

  • Units for temperature should be Kelvin (K) or Rankine (R).
  • Heat input (QA) is positive.
  • Heat output (QR) is negative.
  • Work done by the system (W) is positive.

Example Problems

  • A Carnot engine receives 150 kJ of heat at 425°C and rejects heat at 30°C.
    • Calculate power output.
    • Calculate heat rejected.
  • Two reversible engines in series.
    • Intermediate temperature calculation.
    • Efficiency calculation for each engine.
  • Comparing heat at different temperatures.
