- Europe in 1500 was composed of many competing states, many still existing today, though borders and compositions have changed
- European political and religious leaders strived to control power, often through violence or rebellion

- Nobles acted as extensions of monarch's power but also as checks on their power; owned much of the land and wealth

- The 15th century saw conflict between the Lancastrians and Yorks in England
- The 17th century saw the powerful King Louis XIV successfully control the nobility
