Study Notes
The EuroLeague is a professional basketball club competition widely recognized as the highest level tier league in Europe. It consists of 18 teams, of which 16 have long-term licenses and wild cards, making it a semi-closed league. The competition was first organized by FIBA in 1958 and is one of the most popular indoor sports leagues in the world, with an average attendance of 8,780 for league matches in the 2017–18 season. The most successful club in the competition is Real Madrid, with ten titles, and the current champion is Anadolu Efes. The league operates under a league format since the 2016-17 season, with 18 teams playing each other twice in a double round-robin league regular season, followed by playoffs and the Final Four. The top 8 placed teams at the end of the regular season advance to the playoffs, and the winners of each of the four playoff series advance to the Final Four. Currently, 12 out of the 18 EuroLeague places are held by licensed clubs that have long-term licenses with Euroleague Basketball, and the remaining six are held by associated clubs that have annual licenses. The EuroLeague season is broadcast on television and can be seen in up to 201 countries and territories. It can also be seen by up to 245 million households weekly in China. The league also has its own internet pay TV service, called EuroLeague TV. The EuroLeague Final Four is broadcast on television in up to 213 countries and territories. The EuroLeague has a €630 million strategic agreement with Turkish Airlines for sponsorship reasons, and the top European competition is named Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Basketball.
