The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, marked the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the figurative Iron Curtain, and was a pivotal event in world history that started the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. The opening of the Iron Curtain between Austria and Hungary at the Pan-European Picnic on August 19, 1989, set in motion a peaceful chain reaction, at the end of which there was no longer an East Germany and the Eastern Bloc had disintegrated. Removal of the Wall began on the evening of November 9, 1989, and continued over the following days and weeks, with people nicknamed Mauerspechte (wallpeckers) using various tools to chip off souvenirs, demolishing lengthy parts in the process, and creating several unofficial border crossings.
