The Battle of the Pelennor Fields in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Lord of the Rings was the defence of Minas Tirith by the forces of Gondor and Rohan against the forces of Sauron from Mordor and its allies. The battle was the largest in the War of the Ring and took place in the Pelennor Fields. Sauron's army greatly outnumbered the combined armies of Gondor and its allies. The defenders' numbers were considerably less but they were reinforced by Rohan and Aragorn with a claim to the throne of Gondor. The battle was a tactical defeat for Sauron but he had lost his chief lieutenant. The victory allowed the Host of the West to challenge Sauron and still leave Minas Tirith better defended than it had been during the siege. The battle formed a "spectacular" centrepiece in Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is a key event in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, "The Lord of the Rings". The battle is seen through the eyes of the Hobbit, Pippin, who feels his part to be 'far from glorious'. The battle is tinged with the elegiac, so that whatever the outcome, much will be lost. Tolkien's descriptions of battle are vivid, and he served in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The battle is the centrepiece of Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The film's battle scenes are considered to be the most spectacular and breathtaking ever filmed.
