Study Notes

The Testes

  • The testes are the male gonads, responsible for both hormone production (endocrine) and sperm production (exocrine).
  • Each testis is oval-shaped, measuring approximately 4 cm in length, 3 cm front-to-back, and 2.5 cm in width.
  • The testes are slightly flattened and the left testis is usually positioned lower than the right.
  • Connective tissue septa divide each testis into 200-300 wedge-shaped lobules, each containing 1-3 seminiferous tubules.
  • Sperm production occurs within the seminiferous tubules.
  • Interstitial cells, found between the seminiferous tubules, produce testosterone.
  • The testes descend into the scrotum, a pouch outside the body, where the left testis hangs lower than the right.
  • The lobules containing the seminiferous tubules are positioned lower than the anterior part of the testis.
