Study Notes
The Skull and its Landmarks - Sphenoid Bone
- The sphenoid bone is an unpaired bone
- It's the most complex bone due to its irregular, butterfly or wasp-like shape
- The sphenoid bone is composed of four main parts:
- Body
- Lesser wing
- Greater wing
- Pterygoid processes
- Key anatomical landmarks include:
- Optic canal
- Superior orbital fissure
- Foramen rotundum
- Foramen ovale
- Foramen spinosum
- The optic canal transmits the optic nerve
- The superior orbital fissure allows passage of nerves and vessels to/from the orbit
- The foramen rotundum transmits the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve
- The foramen ovale transmits the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
- The foramen spinosum transmits the middle meningeal vessels and the meningeal branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve
- The sphenoid bone connects with many other bones of the cranium
